 Following a string of triumphant independently released singles including such future classics as Appropriation (By Any Other Name) and Giddy Stratospheres, The Long Blondes return with a new single Separated By Motorways (released December 12th).
It’s been about two years since Kate (lips), Dorian (licks), Reenie (hips), Screech (sticks) and Emma (high kicks) got together, and the journey so far has been jam-packed with razzmatazz and heady thrills: supporting fellow Sheffield darlings Arctic Monkeys at their legendary Leadmill gig, being handpicked by Steve Lamacq to open for Arcade Fire at Lamacq In The City, leaving the crowd baying for more at recent shows at Trash, Our Disco and Frog, and going down a storm at Tribeca Grand and Cake Shop in New York. They’ve also picked up celebrity fans in the form of Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Moss (who spontaneously started dancing when she heard a Blondes’ track in an NYC record store) and personal support requests from Franz Ferdinand, Maximo Park and Sons & Daughters.
Separated By Motorways is the second single on Paul Epworth’s Good & Evil imprint, and sees the man himself behind the controls. "To me the Long Blondes have a classic British songwriting sensibility combined with an awkward no wavey quality,” he explains. “Two styles that should be poles apart but somehow co-exist together beautifully." Yet another irresistible exhibit of The Long Blondes’ pop-magpie tendencies Separated is an exhilarating escapist tale akin to Bonnie Parker fronting early Roxy Music, while B-side Big Infatuation is sarcastic clattering pop like only the Blondes can make. The Long Blondes are part of the next chapter of Sheffield’s idiosyncratic musical heritage: the suburban disco fantasies of the Human League, the opulent ridiculousness of ABC, the seedy glamour of Pulp. With a host of dates in the lead up to Christmas including another support for Franz Ferdinand at Alexandra Palace and a host of killer tracks up their well tailored sleeves, 2006 is sure to be the year of The Long Blondes…
