in the making." - DAILY TELEGRAPH

“For those of us who don't speak the language, Julie's records are like beautiful messages from another world. As enchanting, beguiling, and fascinating as songs by Kate Bush and Bjork.” - MARK RADCLIFFE, BBC RADIO 2
"Julie Fowlis has a beautiful voice. It is rich, percussive and truly soulful. You'd need a cold heart indeed, to not be touched by her music." - PHILIP SELWAY (RADIOHEAD)
Julie Fowlis burst onto the wider music scene in 2006 when she became the first ever Scottish Gaelic singer to win a prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Award. Since winning the Horizon Award for best newcomer, she has won the hearts of audiences around the globe, played every major folk festival in Britain, showcased in Texas and New York, and is in constant demand as a performer of Gaelic music.
Julie’s natural charm, humour and animated story telling have become almost as appealing as her “heart-melting vocals” (Scotsman). Her first English tour in 2006 proved a huge success and 2007 promises to be yet another adventure with the release of her eagerly awaited follow-up album “CUILIDH”.
A true pioneer, Julie has helped to take Gaelic music from specialist to more mainstream BBC radio throughout the UK and beyond. A mere eight months after winning Best Newcomer Julie was nominated for Singer of the Year 2007 at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards
Julie on the making “CUILIDH”:
“It is an honour for me to sing these songs that have been so kindly passed to me by my family and friends. It has been a joy making this record with such talented friends old and new.”
And on her influences:
”Lots of amazing old singers from Uist, many of whom aren't around any more. The wonderful Mary Smith. Iain MacDonald. The Bothy Band, Iain Maclaughlin - Madonna.”
If you haven’t heard her before - or if you didn’t think you liked Scots Gaelic music - be prepared to be surprised.
