Go to www.cityslang.com now and download the track '7/4 (shoreline)' featuring Leslie Feist on vocals – a perfect example of the fine line this masterpiece of an album walks between huge swelling anthems and enigmatic yet mesmerizing arrangements, bordering on collage works.
Once described as the “indie Wu Tang Clan", Broken Social Scene are the central axis of the musical utopia that has evolved in Canada, in particular Toronto, over the past few years. Featuring some 17 members, many of whom were childhood friends and all of whom happily cross-pollinate in each other's live bands and studio recordings, and are connected with the Arts & Crafts label hub, Broken Social Scene are a modern-day phenomena.
Broken Social Scene have a forthcoming self-titled album due imminently, the follow up to 2002's You Forgot it in People, one of the most critically acclaimed releases of recent years, selling over 70,000 copies in the U.S. (double that world-wide) and winning a JUNO Award (like a Brit Award, only Canadian).
You Forgot it in People is now hailed as the touch-stone album that sparked the infiltration of Canadian music on to the international map. Think: The Arcade Fire, Stars, The Dears, Death From Above, Wolf Parade, Black Mountain, Feist...
The first single taken from the sprawling masterpiece that is Broken Social Scene will be 'Ibi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Day)'. A glorious hailstorm of gorgeous mess and noise, 'Ibi...' is a tilting and swaying anthem, bursting forth from layers of shimmering sound and orgasmic horn sections. Is it about Canadian author Ibi Kaslik? Is it a homage to Pavement? Who knows...
What we do know is that an 8-10 member version of the Broken Social Scene live band will perform one show in London this November, and return again in the new year when the full length album is released on 30 January 2006.
Broken Social Scene – they said it would never work, but it does. Some things are meant to stay broken...
