Toronto's Broken Social Scene have blazed through 2006 in extraordinary style. The critical acclaim, the sold out shows, the slavering fans minds' blown... all present and correct.
The latest single will be the pumped-up, exaltation pop of live favourite "Fire Eye'd Boy", taken of course from BSS's third, self-titled album. The b-side is "Canada Vs America (Exhaust Pipe Remix)" a dreamy, fucked-up ball of classic fuzzy, indie rock complete with noise glitches and screaming - kinda like Hit To Death... -era Flaming Lips, but noisier - as only Broken Social Scene can provide these days.
Undoubtedly the live band of the year with their ten member live ensemble delivering an euphoric cacophony built on relentless hooks and overwhelming sonic joy, Broken Social Scene has sold out every London show they've played in the past year, including The Astoria and Koko. Indeed, at Koko on 22 May for the first time ever, the original vocalists Leslie Feist, Emily Haines from Metric and Amy Millan from Stars were in town to join the party.
Their staggering and much talked about performance at All Tomorrows Parties, where they were joined onstage by J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr turned into an episode of total guitar havoc unlikely to be topped for the forseeable future!
The band returns for their final UK appearances in 2006 with a late summer spin around the regions taking in the sold out Reading and Leeds Festivals on the NME/Radio One stage to boot. One last chance to witness the most exciting band of 2006.
